Advice for work

Advice for work

Whether starting a new role or having been in the position for a while, we can always use some advice for work.

Establish a good relationship with your manager.

Your manager plays a crucial role in your development and promotion. Managers are those who represent you at the table in meetings with higher-ups. So, try having regular meetings with your manager. Having a good relationship doesn’t necessarily mean being best friends. It means to be open about your dreams, ambitions, and concerns and ask for feedback. Gain trust.

Own your accomplishments

Keep a living document of things you have done. Either big or small. You will want to return to this document when performance management comes in. Or use it as proof if you’re going to ask for a raise.

Give shoutouts to your peers.

If someone helped you, give kudos to them. This could mean giving kudos during morning huddles or meetings with the team. The person receiving the kudos will feel appreciated and will likely be open to continue helping you down the road.

Set realistic goals.

It can be easy to overestimate what we can do but always double-check your commitments. We must control our time and effort and avoid setting ourselves up for failure. Sometimes it is better to undershoot and over-deliver while learning the ropes at work.

Find a mentor, be a mentor.

Mentorship is important in your personal growth. Finding a mentor can change your life, and the mentor can become part of the support group. Having a mentor provides support, guidance, and motivation. Mentors can help in identifying resources or contacts to help our careers.

Ask Questions

Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it can’t be done differently. Always ask why it has been that way. Question the purpose or the direction things are going.

Be humble but confident.

Another career advice tip is to maintain your feet to the group. Be humble and admit when you don’t know things. I approach this by saying, ” I am not sure how to do X. Could you provide some more information or resources that could help me.” But on the other side, if you know, do your thing with your head up high. Capitalize on your strengths and get the job done.

Value yourself.

This one is essential for career advice. Value and take care of yourself. You will only do your job if you are in a healthy state. If you need some time, take the time to work and focus on yourself. So take your breaks, eat, drink water, and keep your mental health in mind.

Network

Meet as many people as you can. Or, if you know them already, continue scheduling time with them to continue talking.

Be present.

This not only means being on time but also being present. It’s easy to daydream during working hours. Ensure you have your “head in the game” when doing your work. While at work, I would think of things to do after I got off work or where I would like to go during the weekend, and I realized my concentration was lacking and was reflecting on it at work.

Have a positive attitude

People will always want to work with you if you have a great attitude. And, when people want to work with you, they help you succeed.

The above work advice could help you boost your performance at work.
